bigmemory is an R package that "supports the creation, storage, access, and manipulation of massive matrices". Don't drown in the data is a paper by John W. Emerson and Michael J. Kane in the recent issue of Significance (unfortunately the paper is not open access). The authors describes the basic ideas behind bigmemory and why they started the project.

Statistics and R for Linguists - a reading list

Linguists and students of linguistics can find themselves in tough situations since statistics and computing are usually not an integral part of their education, or they only get a crash course on these subjects. I think R is good choice for self study because of the available high quality books and other resources.
